19.2% of european electricity from renewables

19.2 per cent of Europe's electricity came from renewable sources last year, according to data from the European Commission (EC).

In 2020, around 35 to 40 per cent of overall electricity consumption could come from more eco-friendly sources if the current rates of growth are maintained, the EC report revealed.

The 2020 figure is dependent upon the success of energy efficiency policies within Europe.

Wind energy accounted for the largest share of electricity produced from renewable sources.

In 2009 in the UK, total electricity generation from greener modes was 17 per cent higher than in 2007, according to recent data from the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Onshore wind energy production increased by 31 per cent and offshore by 33 per cent, leading to wind generation accounting for 37 per cent of the total eco-friendly electricity production
