World’s largest offshore Wind farm opens off the coast of Kent

The UK is set to produce more electricity from offshore wind farms than the rest of the world put together. Chris Huhne, the energy secretary opened the world’s largest wind farm at Thanet off the coast of Kent.

The 100 turbines each measuring 300ft high will increase the amount of electricity created by offshore wind farms in the UKby a third to 1,314mWh compared to 1,100mWh in the rest of the world.

Thanet Wind Farm was built by Swedish energy giant Vattenfall increasing the number of large scale offshore wind turbines to 436.

Experts are concerned that Britain is relying too heavily on an energy source which needs to be backed up by other technologies because the wind doesn’t always blow.
